Long bio (285 words)

For features, programs and the About page.

David Dewese is a songwriter and solo artist based in Dallas, Texas. He was raised in Mesquite, “forced into music at an early age” by his father, Will, a ’60s rocker who paid him lunch money to practice guitar and remains a big influence. His mother, Doris, is his biggest fan.

In February 2008 the Nashville Scene made David a Critic’s Pick, writing that his “thoughtful, bittersweet tunes” channel Evan Dando. His first solo album, Make The Best Of It, came out that year, followed by Next Christmas (2009), the Upside Down EP (2012) and the single Worry Less and Pray More (2021).

David co-founded two bands. He met Jerry James at church camp, and in 1994 they turned a fake-band joke into The Foxymorons, trading four-track cassettes by mail. A hand-numbered 1998 7-inch reached a Bay Area label, which released Calcutta (1999) before the band had played a show. Rodeo City, Hesitation Eyes (recorded in David’s Nashville spare bedroom; Pitchfork 7.3), Bible Stories and Fake Yoga (Robert Christgau: A−) followed, plus six singles in 2020–22.

In 1997 David and college friend Chad Edgington co-founded The Luxury Liners, named after a Gram Parsons song, and took the band to Nashville, where it became a sharp-dressed power-pop band. When Chad left in 2001, David carried on through Overbored (2003) and Nonetheless (2006), and the band’s songs reached One Tree Hill and a FOX Sports theme. In 2026 the band returned with “Great Day” and “New Beginning”.

David has also toured and recorded with Everman and The Nobility. He began helping with worship music in 2006 and became a worship leader in 2013; since 2022 he has led worship every Sunday at Journey Community Church in Dallas.

David Dewese

The Foxymorons

  • “On their fifth album in 21 years, two Dallas pop-punk hobbyists and/or perfectionists attain the pop-punk grail: 10 tough, catchy, ebullient, stealth-strange songs in 32 minutes.”

  • “[S]end these guys back in the DeLorean a couple of decades and the driving ‘Sentient Creatures’ would have easily rivaled ‘She Don’t Use Jelly’ and ‘Cut Your Hair’ as the alt-rock hit of 1994.”

  • “Hesitation Eyes is a sturdy album… an indication that even with a non-traditional working relationship, the duo still has room to grow.”
