Exciting times around my music headquarters here in California. I’m proud to announce the release of my new album, Upside Down. It’s a 5-songer that I recorded in Nashville, TN & Encinitas, CA between 2010-2011. This is the project I used producers on instead of my usual do-it-yourself production style. I had a blast working with Chris Brush at his In The Red studio on Gorgeous Grace and My Sweet Dove. The supergroup of Tom, Brett and Todd at Zod Lounge produced Into Emptiness. My friend Taylor Harris of 3,2,1…Famous Productions produced Upside Down. I produced Life Is Good and had Alex McCollough of Yes Master! in Nashville master the entire project. Jason Ward of Encinitas shot the cover photo last fall at Coronado Island and I designed the packaging. You can stream the entire album using the widget below. I’m selling autographed CD’s with immediate digital downloads from my web store and you can of course grab a copy at iTunes if that’s your sort of thing.

Howdy, gang. I’m back with some new tunes and concert dates. Up first is my hometown CD release concert in Encinitas, California. I’ll be playing an acoustic concert promoting my very non-acoustic new album on Saturday the 21st at E Street Cafe. I’m having Rich & Mindy from Los Angeles kick off the night at 7:30 and Todd A from Newport Beach will follow at 8:00. I’ll take the stage at 8:30 and the show will be over by 9:30. The entire night is FREE and the venue has food and drinks. Oh yeah, bring $5 to pick up a copy of the new CD! More news later.

I’m finally playing a show in the actual California beach town that I live in! I hope my SoCal contingent can make it out for this FREE event. Not only does E Street Cafe serve excellent food and drinks but they are super close to the ocean. I’ll be joined by another local, Jay Smart of The Smart Brothers. I’ve been playing bass in their band for a couple months now so I reckon you should start following them too. We’ll be playing up and down the coast soon.

Speaking of concerts…a couple weeks ago Todd A and I played a Nashville-style writer’s round in San Diego. Todd has posted the video from our sets so I’m embedding it below. You can hear us trading songs, backing each other, and delivering rambling intros.
Okay, that’s all for now. Oh wait, I guess I could also tell you that the name of my new EP is ‘Upside Down.’ More on that later.

The Luxury Liners is the band I started with my good buddy, Chad Edgington, when we moved to Nashville in 1997. We were two goofy Texans obsessed with Gram Parsons, The Beatles, rhinestones, and Coca Cola. We learned so much about writing, performing, and recording in those early days. In 2000, after several years of recording in studios all over town, our first album, Sound As Ever, was finally released. A year later in 2001, just before Chad left the band, we put out a short collection of songs called the Believe EP. Besides having two awesome original songs, the EP also contained a cover of the Cher hit “Believe.” The song has about 10 writers which made legally selling it via CD or download a headache. This year I decided to deal with all the fees and get it online. So, all that to say, here’s a link to The Luxury Liners’ Believe EP. Below is a video of The Luxury Liners performing the song in Nashville.

It was around this time three years ago that I started playing solo shows. After years of having a band of brothers surrounding me on the stage, I was suddenly showing up at gigs alone. Well, I wasn’t showing up alone – I always made sure to have friends playing before and after me. One of those friends was Todd A. He too was kicking off a solo-acoustic career. In those days, besides talking about music stuff or the awkwardness of being on stage, we also talked about how we’d love to live in California. He made the move shortly thereafter and has been playing up and down the southern coast since then. Now, three years later, I’m finally living in California too. We’ll be joining forces again on Tuesday, February 8th, at the House of Blues in downtown San Diego. Let’s hope some of the initial awkwardness has worn off.

Merry Christmas, y’all! It’s December 1st so I am officially rocking Christmas tunes 24-7 at my house. What about you? Speaking of Christmas music, most of you know I recorded an entire Christmas album last year in Nashville. I sold out of the initial pressing of CD’s so it’s only been available digitally on iTunes. This year I’ve decided to give it away for FREE. Well, you *do* have to fork over your email address but after that it’s yours for free or whatever price you want to tip. See the widget over there in the right-side menu? Fill out that form to start the process. (Click here if you can’t figure it out.) I hope you enjoy the album and use the share links to tell your friends about it.
I’m going to be playing a few little events this month in the San Diego area but no official shows until next year. Be sure you sign up for the mailing list while you’re here.

I moved to Nashville in 1997 to make music. Since then I’ve made 11 albums with wonderful friends and played countless shows around town, the US, and the world. I feel like my original musical mission in Nashville has definitely been accomplished! So all that to say… I moved to California last week! I’ve fancied California my whole life and decided I really needed to just live there for a while. I’ve settled in a beach town north of San Diego and I’m loving it. The weather is divine, the burritos are delicious, and the ocean is all I’d dreamed of. You could say that I’m thoroughly “stoked” on it all right now. I’m playing a show in San Diego this week so I figured I should make a post to explain all that. Hope you are well and I miss you Nashville!

t doesn’t happen very often but The Foxymorons are going to play a CD release show. We did a little house show in Nashville last month and now we’re taking the band to Dallas for a rock show. The album has been getting great reviews so we hope you Texas-folk can come down and buy a copy and witness the live show. This is the only show on the books for a long while so you’ve been warned. We’ll have copies of all of our albums on hand as well as some rare t-shirts we unearthed from the vaults.

Besides working on new solo tunes and The Foxymorons album, I also did a lot of traveling this summer. One exciting thing was a week-long trip to Texas to play bass for my old Luxury Liners band mate, Chad Edgington. We “got the band back together” for a summer camp in East Texas. I also took a 5-day road trip all over the coast of Southern California exploring beach towns. Besides splashing around in the Pacific, I also had the opportunity to swim in both the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico this summer. It was an inspiring beach-centric summer so be on the look out for my surf rock album next year. JOKE!

Earlier this year my childhood pal, Jerry James, and I recorded our 4th album as The Foxymorons. Jerry flew to Nashville several times during the snowy Tennessee winter to record tracks in my frigid basement. We ended up with ten eclectic pop/rock songs covering a range of topics like dressing gowns, self esteem, and dairy queen. We’re calling the album Bible Stories and it came out TODAY. You can buy the physical CD from us via our website or preview and download instantly at iTunes.
Jerry and I also made a music video for our song “This Too Shall Pass”. We each shot footage on our iPhones from our separate towns 700 miles apart. You might recognize the song name from my Make The Best Of It album. The version you’ll hear on Bible Stories was recorded in it’s original key and tempo. Check it out!
